Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to look ahead to the 69th Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. On behalf of the officers and executive board, Kim and I wish you a happy 2018 and invite you to join us at the Cloister at Sea Island, GA May 2 thru May 6, 2018.

Dr. George Kushner has prepared an excellent scientific program with speakers including himself and Dr. Brian Alpert. Dr. Kushner will focus on “Complications in Dentistry” and “Tibia Bone Graft” and Dr. Alpert will present three sessions on “Evolution of OMSF Over the Last 50 Years” and “Forty Year History in Management of Jaw Diseases” and “New Innovations in Management of Jaw Diseases.”

The executive board is proud to announce that two of our long-time members and leaders will be honored at this meeting. Dr. Robert Coles has been awarded our Frank DiPlacido Humanitarian Award and we’ll also honor Dr. Jimmy Albright with the Distinguished Educator Award. Congratulations to both of these accomplished leaders.

We will, again, enjoy a splendid President’s Banquet on Saturday night in a beautiful coastal setting. So, Kim and I are very excited about what awaits us at the Cloister and we hope that we will see you there! Come join us and bring your family and professional friends. Make this the biggest SSOMS meeting ever!

OMS Loses a Giant

With great sadness, we announce the death of past president Dr. Jim Ingrassia, who passed away on December 20. Jim was not only a great leader for the OMS specialty but loved by all.

He fought a courageous battle against overwhelming odds. May we all face the final curtain call with such grace and dignity.

2018 Annual Meeting Highlights

The beauty of the Cloister at Sea Island was breathtaking and the weather was perfect for the entire weekend.


Our meeting began on Thursday with our candidate interviews (we had 19 new candidates!) and SSOMS board meetings. Then we enjoyed connecting with old friends and colleagues at our Wednesday reception.

Our scientific program with Dr. George Kushner and Dr. Brian Alpert were
rigorous and informative. Thank you again for speaking at our conference. Our conference also held two
business sessions and had a range of reports from our committee chairs.

Ms. Kim Jones, wife of President Hal Jones hosted the spouses annual breakfast and we were lucky
enough to gather them all together for a photo! Thank you!

We welcomed 19 candidates to active membership including: Drs. Michael Babston, David Barnett, Hank Blair, Adam Blumer, Michael Buchanan, Justin Damron, Michael Demo, Jennifer Hall, Amy Kuhmichel, Thomas McKeon, Albert Oliphant, Al Pesto, David Parker, Kathlyn Powell, Michael Rosenthal, Lawrence Sivori, Patrick Walker, Mark Adamiak, and Ryan Thomas.

There was hard work but also great friend and family time! See photos below from all of our activities
including  tennis, golfing, fishing and watching the Kentucky Derby.

Our finale for the weekend was our President’s Reception and Banquet honoring our 2018 President Hal Jones, our incoming 2019 President Lee Allen and our two award winners: Dr. Robert L. Coles, DMD (unable to attend) as our Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and Dr. Jimmy E. Albright, DDS honored with the Distinguished Educator Award. Congratulations!

Important Medical Malpractice Legislation Passes the House; Help Needed with Senate

On Wednesday evening, the House passed the medical malpractice legislation (HR 1215) that AAOMS has vigorously advocated. The near party-line vote was 218-210 with 6 members not voting.

One amendment was agreed to during the floor debate and was included in the bill. It does the following:

Allows a physician to apologize to a patient for an unintended outcome without having the apology count against them in the court of law.
Requires a plaintiff to provide a notice of intent to the physician 90 days before the lawsuit is filed.
Defers to sundry state laws regarding lawsuits and outlines requirements witnesses must meet for testimony during trial.

One amendment failed that would have given affirmative defense to defendants in health care liability cases if they can show they complied with clinical practice guidelines.

It will be an uphill battle in the Senate so our work is not done. We must support AAOMS’ legislative efforts.
