2018 Annual Meeting Highlights

December 5, 2017 By Gayle Davies

The beauty of the Cloister at Sea Island was breathtaking and the weather was perfect for the entire weekend.

Our meeting began on Thursday with our candidate interviews (we had 19 new candidates!) and SSOMS board meetings. Then we enjoyed connecting with old friends and colleagues at our Wednesday reception.

Our scientific program with Dr. George Kushner and Dr. Brian Alpert were
rigorous and informative. Thank you again for speaking at our conference. Our conference also held two
business sessions and had a range of reports from our committee chairs.

Ms. Kim Jones, wife of President Hal Jones hosted the spouses annual breakfast and we were lucky
enough to gather them all together for a photo! Thank you!

We welcomed 19 candidates to active membership including: Drs. Michael Babston, David Barnett, Hank Blair, Adam Blumer, Michael Buchanan, Justin Damron, Michael Demo, Jennifer Hall, Amy Kuhmichel, Thomas McKeon, Albert Oliphant, Al Pesto, David Parker, Kathlyn Powell, Michael Rosenthal, Lawrence Sivori, Patrick Walker, Mark Adamiak, and Ryan Thomas.

There was hard work but also great friend and family time! See photos below from all of our activities
including  tennis, golfing, fishing and watching the Kentucky Derby
.

Our finale for the weekend was our President’s Reception and Banquet honoring our 2018 President Hal Jones, our incoming 2019 President Lee Allen and our two award winners: Dr. Robert L. Coles, DMD (unable to attend) as our Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and Dr. Jimmy E. Albright, DDS honored with the Distinguished Educator Award. Congratulations!

A great celebration for all!

Important Medical Malpractice Legislation Passes the House; Help Needed with Senate

June 30, 2017 By Gayle Davies

On Wednesday evening, the House passed the medical malpractice legislation (HR 1215) that AAOMS has vigorously advocated. The near party-line vote was 218-210 with 6 members not voting.

One amendment was agreed to during the floor debate and was included in the bill. It does the following:

Allows a physician to apologize to a patient for an unintended outcome without having the apology count against them in the court of law.
Requires a plaintiff to provide a notice of intent to the physician 90 days before the lawsuit is filed.
Defers to sundry state laws regarding lawsuits and outlines requirements witnesses must meet for testimony during trial.

One amendment failed that would have given affirmative defense to defendants in health care liability cases if they can show they complied with clinical practice guidelines.

It will be an uphill battle in the Senate so our work is not done. We must support AAOMS’ legislative efforts.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Please click on this link to send a letter to your Senators:

You’ll love kicking off this voyage in Civitavecchia..The 793-passenger Quest provides a low-key cruise experience rather than high-tech, trendy amenities found on megaships. Think intimate cocktail bars, paneled dining rooms and afternoon tea in comfy surroundings.

Board the ship in Civitavecchia (Rome) then it’s off to more classics. A classic thing to do in Amalfi is to rent a Fiat 500, the quintessential Italian car, and drive along the Amalfi coast, the quintessential Italian road. But drive slowly; the narrow lanes, switchback corners, and terrifying drop-offs make any other speed too frightening. The views are well worth the trip. Or take a tour and let someone else do the driving. And get a good night’s sleep, for it’s off to Taormina, Sicily next, where a cannoli tasting on top of Europe’s largest active volcano is on tap.

On the Greek island of Corfu, wander the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, and then try a Greek coffee under the vaulted archways of the Liston. Or drive out to the countryside to Agni, the gourmet center of Corfu, and sample the pickled octopus in a classic taverna. On the Dalmatian Coast, tiny Kotor lies hidden from the open sea, tucked into a fjord. Visit the medieval Old Town and find any one of the splendid piazzas with boutiques and more octopus, grilled here with olives, tomatoes, and onions. And while in Kotor, experience an AzAmazing evening event included in your cruise.
After a stop at the charming island of Hvar, sail to Slovenia. A late night here gives time for a trip to the Škocjan Caves, the largest underground canyon in the world. Above ground, venture out to the capital of Ljubljana and ride the glass elevator up a wooded hill to Ljubljana Castle. After the views in the tower, find the bistro for Slovenian comfort food. But save room for the best pizza you’ve ever tried in Venice, on your last stop. Eight nights. Bountiful cultural opportunities. And did we mention the food?

Oceanview Stateroom – $3,699 per person

Balcony Stateroom – $4,099 per person

Other categories available. Deposit amount is $1,100 of which all is refundable except for $50 if cancelled before May 2018. No single supplement special.
