We are honored to have chosen Gerald Laboda, DMD as our Lifetime Achievement Award Winner; his accomplishments and dedication to our profession are exemplary.
Dr. Laboda received his DMD degree from Temple University in 1960. His residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was from 1961-1963 at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, PA and his graduate medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Laboda was Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at US Army Hospital, Sandia Base in Albuquerque, NM. He then moved to Southwest Florida with Columbia/HCA Health Care Corp where he became medical director. Dr. Laboda was an Adjunct Clinical Professor, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, College of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University and at Broward General Medical Center from 2008-2015. He is a founding Partner and was Senior Surgeon at Southwest Florida Oral and Facial Surgery, PA. from 1965 to 2007.
Dr. Laboda has been a member and served as an officer of many state and national Oral and Maxillofacial organizations including: Board of Dentistry, State of Florida, 1999-2003; Chairman – Board of Dentistry, State of Florida, 2002; Chairman – Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation (OMSF) 2000-2002; Director – OMSF, 1991-2002; President – American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, (AAOMS) 1989-1990; President-Elect– AAOMS, 1988-1989; Vice-President – AAOMS, 1987-1988; Trustee – District III, Board of Trustees, AAOMS, 1984-1987; Committeeman of the Year – AAOMS, 1983; Chairman – Committee on Practice, AAOMS, 1980-1983; Committee – Parameters of Care Coordination Committee, AAOMS, 1991-1994; Chairman,1994-1998; Officer – Past President, Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; Past President, Southwest Florida Dental Society; Past President, Florida Dental Society of Anesthesiology; Past President, Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; Delegate or Alternate, House of Delegates, AAOMS, 1971-1984; Consultant – Council on Hospital and Institutional Dental Services of American Dental Association, 1980-1983; Consultant – Special Committee on Managed Care, ABOMS, 1994-1995; Secretary/Chairman – District III Caucus, AAOMS, 1981-1982 and is currently a Diplomate, ABOMS, 1966 – present.
Dr. Laboda is a Fellow in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, American College of Dentists and International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. His hospital affiliations include: Emeritus Staff – Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center, Lee Memorial Hospital, Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center, Cape Coral Hospital and Lehigh Regional Medical Hospital. He was a member of Board of Trustees, Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center, 1974-2007; member of Board of Trustees, Gulf Coast Hospital, 1995-2007; member of Board of Trustees, East Pointe Hospital, 1995-2002 and Chairman, Board of Trustees, Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center, 1987-1994.
Dr. Laboda has been a vital and active member of his community serving on numerous boards and in many positions including: Stonegate Bank, member, Board of Directors, 2011-2016; Vice Chair – Board of Directors, SW Capital Bank, 2007- 2011; Chairman, Ft. Myers Downtown Redevelopment Agency, 1993 – Present; Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation – 2001-2007; Chairman, Florida Repertory Theater, Inc. 2002-Present; Lee County Public Schools Foundation, Inc, Past President and Charter Member; Coalition for a Drug Free Lee County; Barnett Bank of Lee County, N.A.; (Senior Member of the Executive Committee), 1974-1997; Nations Bank – SW Florida Market, 1997-1999; Y.M.C.A. of Lee County, Florida (Past President); Lee County Cancer Society and the United Way of Lee County.
Dr. Laboda continues to publish and present on oral and maxillofacial surgery topics across the U.S. and has been published in many accredited journals.
